Mr Myrddin Rees DL MS FRCS FRCSEd Biography

Merv Rees is a consultant hepatobiliary surgeon at North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke. After qualifying from Westminster Medical School, London in 1973 he subsequently underwent his surgical training at St George’s Hospital, London.  In 1980 he spent 2 years as Research and Clinical Fellow at the Oschner Clinic, New Orleans.  In 1986, after a period with Professor Johannes Scheele in Erlangen, he established a hepatic resection practice with particular reference to colorectal secondaries.  He currently performs (together with his colleagues Tim John and Fenella Welsh) more than 175 hepatectomies annually, with a total to date of over 2050 resections.  He has a particular interest in hepatic anatomy relevant to surgeons, use of video in surgical teaching and evolving techniques for expanding the indications for resection of hepatic malignancy.  He has written papers and lectured worldwide on these topics.  He is a past President of the Section of Surgery of the Royal Society of Medicine, Past Chairman of the UK Liver Surgeons Group and Past President of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.
