Professor J.J.B. van Lanschot's Biography
J. Jan B. van Lanschot (1953) is Professor of Surgery at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at the Erasmus Medical Center (formerly: Dijkzigt University Hospital) in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
After his medical education at the State University Utrecht, he was surgically trained under Prof. Hans Jeekel in Rotterdam. He wrote his academic thesis in 1987 on “Metabolic gas exchange in critically ill surgical patients.” Subsequently he obtained a surgical research fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA (head: Prof. Douglas W. Wilmore).
From 1989 until 1990 he was a fellow in Colorectal Surgery and from 1990 until 1993 a fellow in Esophago-Gastric Surgery (Dijkzigt University Hospital, Rotterdam). In 1993 he became a certified Intensive Care specialist. In 1993 he moved to the Academic Medical Center at the University of Amsterdam, where he was appointed Professor of Surgical Oncology in 1999. In 2007 he obtained his current position at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.
His clinical practice as well as his scientific interest is focused on esophageal cancer.
