Professor Martin Schrappe's Biography

Prof Martin SchrappeProfessor Martin Schrappe studied medicine at the Universities of Würzburg and Hamburg, Germany. He undertook his pediatric hematology and oncology training at the Children's Hospital, MHH, Hannover. From 1987 – 1990 he was a research fellow in the Division of Tumor Cell Biology, Department of Immunology at the The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, California, USA. Professor Schrappe was awarded his PhD in 1999 and in the year 2000 he became a Professor for "Special Pediatric Hematology and Oncology" at the Medical School, Hannover (MHH). From 2004, Professor Schrappe has held the position of Full Professor and Director of General Pediatrics, University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel, Kiel, Germany.

Professor Schrappe’s research interests focus on clinical research in childhood ALL and NHL. This involves coordination and evaluation of BFM clinical trials for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma since 1990; special subgroups of pediatric leukemia: Ph+ ALL, infant ALL, minimal residual disease (MRD), second malignancy and international randomized multicenter clinical trials for childhood ALL fully stratified by MRD: This started in 2000 with trial "AIEOP-BFM ALL 2000" (cooperation with G. Masera, Italy, and H. Gadner, Austria), followed by trial “AIEOP-BFM ALL 2009” performed since 2010 in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Israel and Australia. Other areas of research consist of evaluation of MRD in high-risk ALL treated with and without allogeneic stem cell transplantation and molecular profiles of ALL resistant to treatment, and independent molecular markers for high-risk ALL.

Professor Schrappe has several society memberships in Germany, Austria, Europe, and the USA. He has been involved in the capacity of Coordinator and Chairman in the International BFM Study Group (iBFM) and various BFM Trials, and Taskforces.
